Instead of abortion, why people make life miserable for the child?

Some women can't afford to be pregnant, let alone to raise the baby. One of my best friend got pregnant by her college boyfriend. They eventually got married but their life is horrible. I could see her struggling day and night to cover the expense to support her husband's low income job.
